Rheinmetall Clears Baltic Sea for Offshore Wind Expansion

In a recent initiative for renewable energy infrastructure, Düsseldorf-based technology conglomerate Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract to clear explosive ordnance from the Baltic Sea. This operation is a critical precursor to connecting an offshore wind farm to the mainland power grid. The contract, valued in the low double-digit million-euro range, underscores Rheinmetall's expertise in maritime ordnance detection and disposal.

Project Details

The contract was issued by grid operator 50Hertz as part of the OST-6-1 project. Rheinmetall's responsibilities encompass the detection, identification, documentation, and removal of explosive ordnance from the seabed. Transportable hazardous materials and remnants of munitions will be either handed over to appropriate authorities or safely detonated on-site.

Cable systems for offshore projects

This marks Rheinmetall's inaugural major offshore explosive ordnance clearance project. The offshore operations, managed by Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH, commenced in July 2024 and are slated for completion by May 2025. The endeavor highlights Rheinmetall's proficiency in offshore ordnance detection and clearance, ensuring compliance with all legal and environmental regulations.

The primary objective is to clear designated areas, enabling 50Hertz to install offshore extra-high voltage cables and two offshore platforms off the coast of the Fischland-Darß region. Rheinmetall AG leads this project in collaboration with specialized companies from Germany and Norway.

Environmental and Safety Considerations

Rheinmetall's operations include strict adherence to environmental guidelines to minimize ecological impacts. Innovative techniques and equipment ensure both safety and efficiency in the disposal process. This reflects the company's commitment to sustainable practices in challenging maritime environments.

Timeline and Milestones

  • July 2024: Project kickoff.
  • November 2024: Initial clearance progress and stakeholder reporting.
  • May 2025: Target project completion, including handover to 50Hertz for cable installations.
