Developments on IRIS-T SLM in Q4 2024

The IRIS-T SLM air defense system continues to play a foundational role in strengthening national and allied security - especially in the context of the European SkyShield Initiative (ESSI). In the fourth quarter of 2024, significant milestones have been achieved, other's have not - from deliveries to Ukraine to international acquisitions and expanded production capacity.

Germany Delivers Four IRIS-T SLM Air Defense Systems to Ukraine, Plans Total of 12 Amid Ongoing Conflict

As of December 21, 2024, Germany has delivered a total of four IRIS-T SLM air defense systems to Ukraine. The most recent delivery occurred in October 2024, bringing the total to four units.

Germany has pledged to supply Ukraine with a total of 12 IRIS-T SLM systems. The delivery schedule includes two additional systems expected by the end of 2024, with the remaining six units to be delivered at a later stage.

In addition to the IRIS-T SLM systems, Germany has also provided Ukraine with IRIS-T SLS short-range air defense systems. As of October 2024, Ukraine had received three SLS systems.

These deliveries are part of Germany's ongoing commitment to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities amid the ongoing conflict. The IRIS-T systems have been instrumental in intercepting aerial threats, contributing significantly to the defense of Ukrainian airspace.

Germany Declares IOC for IRIS-T SLM: A Leap in Air Defense for the Bundeswehr

Germany has achieved a significant milestone with the declaration of Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the IRIS-T SLM air defense system. The German Air Force marked this achievement at a ceremony held at the Todendorf military training area in Schleswig-Holstein. The event was attended by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, underscoring the strategic importance of the IRIS-T SLM within Germany’s national defense framework.

The IOC declaration signifies that the system is now integrated into the German Air Force and ready for operational deployment. This development highlights Germany’s commitment to modernizing its air defense capabilities in response to evolving global threats. Notably, the IRIS-T SLM system has demonstrated a high success rate in intercepting aerial threats, with reports indicating a hit rate of 95% or more.

The IRIS-T SLM system is designed to counter a variety of airborne threats, including missiles, drones, and aircraft, thereby enhancing Germany's defensive posture. Its deployment is a testament to the country's dedication to strengthening its military capabilities amid changing security dynamics.

International Acquisitions: Expanding the Global Reach of the IRIS-T SLM

Bulgaria’s Purchase

Parliamentary Approval: In August 2024, the Bulgarian Parliament approved the acquisition of one IRIS-T SLM (Surface-Launched Medium-Range) air defense system for the Bulgarian Air Force. This initial procurement, valued at approximately €182 million, represents the first step in a phased approach to enhance Bulgaria’s air defense capabilities. The acquisition aligns with the country's broader strategy to strengthen national security amidst an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape.

Contract Signing: On October 7, 2024, Bulgaria formalized its purchase by signing a contract with Diehl Defence. The agreement includes provisions for up to five additional IRIS-T SLM systems and one long-range IRIS-T SLX system by 2032, reflecting Bulgaria’s participation in the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). This phased acquisition plan is expected to significantly bolster Bulgaria’s air defense infrastructure over the next decade.

Slovenia’s Purchase

Agreement Signing: In December 2023, Slovenia became the first among the 19 ESSI member nations to finalize an agreement for the procurement of the IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense system from German manufacturer Diehl Defence. The contract was signed by Dr. Damir Črnčec, Slovenia's State Secretary for Defence, and Benedikt Zimmer, his German counterpart.

System Specifications and Costs: The acquisition includes a comprehensive fire unit, featuring a radar component, a tactical operations center, four missile launchers, IRIS-T SL guided missiles, and logistic support. The system is designed to counter a range of threats, including enemy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones, with a range of up to 40 kilometers and an altitude of up to 20 kilometers. The total cost of the system, excluding VAT, is €146.82 million.

Delivery Timeline: While the exact delivery timeline remains undisclosed, Diehl Defence has allocated production slots to ensure timely deliveries for ESSI member nations, including Slovenia. It is anticipated that Slovenia will receive the system within a few years, marking a significant enhancement in the country’s air defense capabilities and providing medium-range air defense for the first time.

With air and missile threats increasing, Europe complements NATO’s NATINAMDS with the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI) to create an integrated and layered security net.

Production Expansion: Meeting Growing Demand

Earlier this year, Diehl Defence, the manufacturer of the IRIS-T SLM, has responded to surging demand by significantly expanding its production capacity. The company plans to double missile production by 2025 and aims to produce at least 10 firing units annually by 2026.

To support this increased production, Diehl Defence is investing nearly one billion euros in new manufacturing facilities across several locations. This investment will enhance the company's ability to deliver systems promptly to both Germany and international customers, reinforcing the IRIS-T SLM's reputation as a reliable and effective air defense solution.

Diehl Defence Expands German Missile Production Capabilities
The expansion, part of a larger €800 million investment plan across Diehl’s operations, will involve the construction of up to 15 new buildings in the coming years. The initial phase includes production facilities and infrastructure, including 100 new jobs to become a key hub for defense operations.

Conclusion

The fourth quarter of 2024 has been a pivotal period for the IRIS-T SLM air defense system. From bolstering Ukraine’s defenses to achieving operational readiness in Germany and securing international deals, the system continues to demonstrate its value in addressing modern air defense challenges. With expanded production capabilities, Diehl Defence is well-positioned to meet growing global demand, ensuring that the IRIS-T SLM remains at the forefront of air defense technology.
