The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) is set to receive cutting-edge training solutions for its C-390 Millennium fleet through a strategic partnership between Embraer, Rheinmetall, and ETI. This groundbreaking collaboration includes the deployment of state-of-the-art simulators and training systems by late 2026, enhancing the operational readiness of the Dutch Air Force.
Comprehensive Training Systems for C-390 Pilots and Crew
The RNLAF’s training suite will feature advanced solutions tailored to meet the unique requirements of the C-390 Millennium. The contract includes:
1. Full Flight Simulator (FFS)
Developed in collaboration with Rheinmetall, the Level-D qualifiable FFS simulates:
- Standard and emergency operations.
- Military scenarios.
- Over 350 malfunction scenarios for realistic pilot training.
This immersive system is designed to prepare pilots for complex missions in diverse environments.
2. Cargo Handling Station Trainer (CHST)
The CHST provides:
- Immersive training for loadmasters and crew.
- Visual simulations of the cargo hold and exterior aircraft views.
This enhances cargo operations training, ensuring smooth handling of diverse mission scenarios.
3. Computer-Based Trainer (CBT)
ETI’s CBT delivers:
- Theoretical instruction for pilots, crew, and maintenance teams.
- A SCORM-compatible Learning Management System for flexible and accessible learning modules.
These systems collectively ensure that the RNLAF’s personnel are mission-ready and well-prepared to operate the C-390.
Strategic Importance of the Training Partnership
The collaboration signifies a major milestone in Embraer’s and Rheinmetall’s partnership with the RNLAF.
Carlos Naufel, President and CEO of Embraer Services & Support, highlighted that the tailored solutions are meticulously designed to meet the RNLAF’s operational demands. Stefan Klaes, Rheinmetall’s Head of Sales for Aviation Systems, underscored the realistic and advanced capabilities of the simulators, ensuring top-tier training for Dutch Air Force personnel.
C-390 Millennium: A Modern Tactical Transport Aircraft
The Embraer C-390 Millennium is a versatile and robust tactical transport aircraft renowned for its:
- Payload capacity: 26 tons.
- Top speed: 470 knots.
- Operational flexibility: Capable of cargo transport, air-to-air refueling, search and rescue, and disaster response missions.
- High reliability: 15,000+ flight hours with a mission success rate exceeding 99%.
Designed for operation on semi-prepared and unpaved airfields, the C-390 offers a modern alternative to the aging Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules. Its advanced technology and cost-effectiveness are driving widespread adoption across European air forces.
European Expansion and Collaboration
The RNLAF’s acquisition of the C-390 Millennium is part of a broader initiative to standardize tactical transport fleets across Europe. In July 2024, the Dutch Ministry of Defence signed a contract for nine C-390 aircraft, with five for the Netherlands and four for Austria. Deliveries are set to begin in 2027.
This joint procurement with Austria aims to:
- Strengthen operational capabilities.
- Enhance interoperability among European NATO members.
- Optimize training, logistics, and platform development.
Other NATO countries, including Portugal, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, have also joined the C-390 program, underscoring the aircraft’s growing prominence in Europe.
Transforming Air Force Training and Readiness
The implementation of advanced training systems is a testament to the RNLAF’s commitment to operational excellence. By equipping its personnel with state-of-the-art simulators and instructional tools, the Netherlands ensures its air force is prepared for modern challenges.
This partnership between Embraer, Rheinmetall, and ETI not only elevates Dutch air force training but also cements the C-390 Millennium’s status as a critical asset in Europe’s defense landscape.
